Beneath an Icon
The Unseen Work Protecting One of Rotorua’s Most Historic Buildings.
Some building projects are all about what you can see; the striking finish, the fine detailing, the craftsmanship that catches the eye. And then there are projects where the most important work happens out of sight.
Ohinemutu Village, Rotorua
At Tailored Builds, we’ve recently been given the opportunity to work on one of Rotorua’s most iconic and historically significant buildings - St Faith's Anglican Church. Situated in the heart of Ōhinemutu, beside Lake Rotorua, St Faith’s is a place where history, faith, art and culture meet. It stands on a site that has been important to local people for centuries, and the church itself has been part of the landscape since the late 1800s.
It’s a building many people recognise instantly. But the work we’ve been entrusted with isn’t about what people see when they walk through the doors. It’s about what lies beneath them.
Why Foundations Matter
Every building tells its story above ground, but that story can only continue if the structure below ground remains strong.
In this case, our role is to re-pile the church: strengthening and renewing the foundations that support the building, helping prolong its life for future generations.
Piles are one of the most critical parts of any structure, yet they’re rarely noticed. Hidden below the floor and beneath the soil, they quietly do the heavy lifting year after year. Until they need attention - that’s when experience matters.
Building in a Unique Environment
Rotorua is unlike almost anywhere else in New Zealand. Thermal activity, changing ground conditions and natural moisture all create unique challenges for buildings, especially heritage structures that were built in another era.
Re-piling a historic church in this environment requires more than standard building knowledge. It demands careful planning, technical precision, respect for the existing structure, and an understanding that every movement matters.
It’s the kind of project we value most: complex, meaningful, and requiring a calm hands-on approach from start to finish.
Respecting the Past While Protecting the Future
Working on a landmark like St Faith's Anglican Church is a privilege.
Buildings like this carry stories, memories and identity, they connect generations. Preserving them means more than maintenance, it means ensuring they remain standing, safe and strong for the people who value them now, and for those who will value them in years to come.
Sometimes the most important craftsmanship is the part nobody sees. And that’s exactly how it should be.
