Designed to Belong
Building Connection Between House and Land
A well-designed home should feel connected to its surroundings. Whether it’s overlooking the lake, tucked into the native bush, or sitting in an established street, the best homes are the ones that feel like they’ve been deliberately designed to blend into their surroundings.
Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
We’re pretty lucky to build in what we genuinely think is one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand, and maybe even the world. We’re probably a bit biased, but it’s home for us, so it’s hard to beat. The lakes, native bush, changing light, and natural landscape around Tarawera and Ōkāreka all create an environment that deserves to be built around carefully and respectfully.
Start with the site
The environment naturally plays a big role in a good design process. The contours of the land, surrounding vegetation, lake views, natural light and weather conditions all influence the way a home should be designed and built.
At Tailored Builds, we believe good design starts with understanding the site. Every section has its own opportunities and constraints, and taking the time to respond to those properly often leads to a far better result - both visually and practically.
Select the materials
Natural timber interiors help to draw the natural surroundings in, creating harmony between indoors and out.
Material selection matters
The materials chosen for a home can dramatically change how it sits within its environment, and how it draws the environment in.
Natural materials like cedar, stone and textured concrete work really well around the lakes, complementing the landscape while ageing gracefully over time. Darker colour palettes and muted finishes often help homes feel grounded within the bush and volcanic terrain, while large glazing systems allow natural light and views to become part of the overall design.
Of course, aesthetics are only one part of the equation. The materials used also need to consider durability and performance. Lakeside environments can be tough on homes, so choosing products that can withstand moisture, UV exposure and changing weather conditions is just as important.
A dark palette paired with natural timber blends beautifully into green surroundings.
The goal is always balance - creating a home that feels intentional and architectural while still feeling appropriate to the environment it sits within.
Design with the land, not against it
Some of the best design outcomes come from working with the natural characteristics of the site rather than trying to completely reshape or compete with them.
Things like positioning living areas to maximise morning light, designing around established trees, or stepping the home with the contours of the land to reduce unnecessary excavation and create a building that sits lightly on the land. Thoughtful decisions early in the process make a significant difference to both the functionality of the home and how naturally it sits within the landscape.
Homes designed this way often feel more timeless. They settle into their surroundings more comfortably and maintain a stronger connection to the environment over time.
The build jobs we love most
Building or renovating a custom home is about so much more than creating something visually impressive. It’s about creating a home that feels right for the people living in it, and for the place where it stands.
At Tailored Builds, we work closely with our clients, architects and consultants to create homes that respond to both the site and the way you want to live - balancing design intent, material selection and practical building experience to deliver something that feels like it truly belongs in its environment as if it’s always been there.
